FAQ's
What is Fleet Insurance in Canada?
Fleet insurance is a commercial auto insurance policy that covers multiple vehicles owned or leased by a business under one plan. It simplifies management and may offer cost savings compared to insuring each vehicle separately.
What qualifies as a fleet in Canada?
Typically, 2 to 5 vehicles is the minimum to qualify as a fleet, depending on the insurer. Larger fleets (10+) often get more flexible terms and deeper discounts.
Are all drivers covered under fleet insurance?
Yes, but it depends on how the policy is structured. Named driver policy: Only listed drivers are covered. Any authorized driver policy: Any employee with permission to drive is covered (more flexible but may be costlier). You must ensure that all drivers have valid licenses and clean driving records where possible.
Do I need fleet insurance if I only use vehicles occasionally?
If your vehicles are regularly used for business, you still need commercial coverage, even if usage is light or seasonal. Personal auto insurance does not cover business use in most cases. If only one or two vehicles are used, you may consider commercial auto insurance instead of a full fleet policy.
What happens if an employee causes an accident?
If the employee was operating a company vehicle within the scope of work, the fleet insurance policy covers the damages, up to policy limits. Repeated incidents may affect your premiums.
